2012 Chevrolet Malibu
Mileage168,607Service Date8/27/2026Services Performed- Confirmed complaint, extracted broken spark plug and installed new. Started engine and found engine still runs rough. Connected scanner pulled codes and found. -P0014- Exhaust camshaft position system performance. -P0300- Engine misfire detected. Using scanner monitored live data and found cylinders 2, 3 and 4 are all misfiring. Inspected engine oil level and found level is low, added oil until engine reached specification. 3.5 quarts of oil was added to the engine. Started engine and found concern is still present. Removed intake ducting and inspected over exhaust camshaft solenoid and connector. Found no obvious faults, using scanner confirmed an audible click can be heard coming from the solenoid, which indicates power and ground are present at the solenoid. Swapped out solenoid for known good part and retested. Confirmed engine no longer runs rough. Found large oil lead at the rear of the valve cover gasket which is causing the low oil concern.
- With engine cover removed, disconnected exhaust vvt solenoid electrical connector. Removed solenoid retaining bolt and removed solenoid. Installed new and assembled in reverse order, cleared codes and test drove vehicle to confirm concern is no longer present.
- Removed intake ducting/engine cover assembly. Removed all ignition coils and removed all valve cover retaining bolts. Removed valve cover, cleaned sealing surfaces and re installed valve cover with a new gasket. Assembled all previously removed parts in reverse order and confirmed no leaks are present at the valve cover.
